Google Music Alfred Powerpack

UPDATE 3/6/12: I updated these Alfred extensions to play nicely with Google Play. Feel free to update the keyword shortcuts. I opted to keep the Google Music associations.

I find myself using Google Music Play a lot lately. And like you, I have multiple windows open at any given time. It is because of this that I find it terribly cumbersome to Tab over to Google Chrome, find the Google Music Play tab, and hit Pause just to do something as simple as pause the music.

Wouldn’t it be great if I could assign a hotkey to trigger Pause/Play within the Google Music Play when creating in Fireworks or coding in Coda? Why yes, yes it would be great. As it turns out I’m not the only one who thought it cool.

In an effort to constantly improve workflow, I decided to turn these scripts into Alfred actions. So without further adieu…

NOTE: You must be an Alfred Powerpack user to take advantage of these extensions.

Google Music Play Alfred Powerpack

What’s included: 3 Alfred extensions to trigger Pause/Play, Next, and Previous inside Google Music Play when using Google Chrome.

Keywords are great and all, but what about assigning these actions to hotkeys?

I’m glad you asked! It’s super easy.

  1. Install any of the extensions above.
  2. Inside Alfred’s preference window, click Hotkeys.
  3. Click +
  4. New Extensions -> Applescript
  5. Within the extensions dropdown on the right side, select the imported extension from Step 1.
  6. Click inside the hotkey textbox to assign the keystroke.
  7. Done.

Google Music Play Alfred BONUS Powerpack

What’s included: 3 bonus Alfred extensions to trigger Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down and Shuffle inside Google Music Play when using Google Chrome.

SUPER-BONUS: Searching Google Music Play

This tip is experimental at best. From what I can tell you can search your Google Music Play library by creating a new Alfred Custom Search.

  1. Inside Alfred’s preference window, click Features.
  2. In the left-hand column, click Custom Searches.
  3. Click +, to create a new search
  4. Search URL:{query}_sr
  5. Fill in the other fields to your liking.
  6. Enjoy!

If you know of any way to condense these Alfred extensions into one fantastic extension, please let me know.

  1. Thanks Scott, a really useful addition to the Alfred armoury.

I used to get a little miffed at having to switch through to the Google Music tab to change tracks, pause etc (oh what a hard life we lead eh!?). But this has made my day a little easier.

  2. I use this a lot too. Thanks!

With Google’s latest update to Play, Music, etc. the controls no longer appear to work and my javascript-fu isn’t good enough to fix it. 🙁

A slightly updated version would be great. Keep up the awesome work!

      1. Ha! Thanks for the feedback. I just opened up my browser to begin troubleshooting it when I got your second comment.
